Tavares, fl

The town of Tavares is nestled in between Leesburg and Mount Dora , north of Orlando.
It sits in the mouth of the Dora Canal- some say the most beautiful canal system in the world! The town gets it's name from a popular Portuguese surname.

Founded by Newspaper baron , Major Alexander H. St. Clair Abrams, in 1880 the town's economy was supported by the citrus crops as many neighboring towns. Alexander had high hopes that this sleep little town would one day be the Capital of Florida, however history proved him wrong as the town became the seat of Lake County.

Alexander Abrams ( for short) was instrumental in bringing the railroad through Tavares to Orlando. Not to be outdone he donated the land and built the first church in Tavares . The congregation attended it's first sermon in 1885. Built in the Gothic design the church was enlarged some 100 years later,

Just scrapping around

SO this is my newest creation. It is a muslin 8 X8 square. I have topstitched some scraps onto the square so it looks like flower. They will fray to the stitching line I have placed on each applique, Once washed the flower petals will fray and curl giving it a worn but rustic look. I will take this quilt top home and quilt it on my frame, with an ivory thread, The plain squares I will put on a flower maybe a big dahlia. I will have to see what inspiration takes hold. The trim is also scrap and misfits of fabrics.

This production will fit a twin bed easily and will soon for ready for some little girl!

A friend of mine went into the hospital

In order to pass the time and stick near my email for updates I made this reversible bag. It has deep pockets in the bag and has a nice flannel lining. Then I put a little button hole- I just guessed it with the zip zag too lazy to put on the buttonholer.
I have a matching quilt for it to go into.. it is a gift for a young lady who shall remain nameless! HAHA

Mount Dora

Ben and I went to Mount Dora for a little walk and snoop
I had been there before and wanted to return.
On my first visit I snooped in the many Artsy Fartsy shops but
did not delve into the history of the town.

Like most Florida towns the origin came from Oranges, little did I know!
Oranges were cultivated in the area and shipped by water and later by rail.
Mount Dora was a pass through for people travelling from East to West via rail,
two passenger trains passed daily. Of course with the railroad came more progress
in freight and oranges were packed in tissue paper and made there way across the
country. The local orange groves stamped their oranges with the seal of the
well known fish, the " Bass".

The town early settlers were very lonely as the first town residents in 1874
the Simpson's made their homestead in what was called Royellou soon to be changed to
Mount Dora.Between 1974 and 1882 there were 16 full time families in Mount Dora.
Soon to follow was the railroad in 1887,one year after the first published town newspaper.

Besides the orange groves the area was known for it's beautiful lakes and
Mount Dora became a waterfront play area for the rich. It's economy flourished
in the summer as people visited by train, water and road and stayed in the
prestigious Lakeshore Inn. As well as several historic bed and breakfasts
throughout the town.

One may not know that Mount Dora was also a historical town not for it's beauty
but for the history of it's black heritage. Today a strong Historical Committee
maintains the culture of the community as it was first adopted it's doctrine in
1898 when the men of Mount Dora formed the Masonic Lodge . With strong attendance
they have received much recognition from the state of Florida for their work./

Today was the day under Protest or Not
The RV park had their art show. I prepared my craft, with written direction and samples. Not to be outdone by a live demo. I twisted and turned and weaved my fibre.
All the while without stabbing myself with my barbed needle I crafted a figure and a
petaled flower. There were lots of questions as I quickly handled the raw wool fibre, turning it into a recognizable object.

SO after all I was a lady of craft not like last year when I was deamed a lady of ill repute in the world of fine art. That is it I socked it to them!

Winter Wimp

As a light frost hits the ground and temps hovering just above the freezing mark.....
Gone are the days we used to tow our RV through frozen New York and PA state roads. Long days of driving followed by sleeping in " take away your breath" temps huddled in an RV, three layers deep under cover. Frightened to run the furnace that would bleed the truck batteries dry. We got enough shut eye to renew our noggins and driving skills, then back on the road again. We followed the process each winter, increasing our length of stay in the deep south. Leaving our home earlier each year until it became apparent we would celebrate Thanksgiving twice in the gold ole US of A.

Today we are basking in Fl, RV furnace revved up. The outside temps boast a crisp 37F and the inside temp is 65F. Where had the time gone when we Frisky Canadians would tempt any temp with short sleeved shirts.

We are slowly melting into the spoiled kingdom of Snowbirds, whimping our way through winter. Tsk Tsk
